"We're counting down the weeks biggest hits and the hits don't stop 'till we reach the top." American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This is a recording of a rebroadcast from internet radio. In this broadcast: Max Headroom has a song at number 40 and Don Johnson (Miami Vice) has a song at number 20. One listener wrote in saying that when the band Brelin hit number one, he wondered how many other acts named for cities had ever hit number one. Casey says there were six others! Casey answers the question, "What recording act has had the most top 40 hits in a single calendar year?" Casey says the year was 1964, the act had 19 top forty hits and 6 number one's that year, and they are in this countdown! After Rolling Stone Magazine called Phil Collins the cabbage patch kid of rock 'n' roll, people started throwing cabbage patch dolls on stage during his performances. Casey tells how Mr. Collins responded to all that. Casey lists six television network actors in leading roles who went on to hit number one on the pop chart. There is only one song title in the rock era that has ever hit number one three times. The song that did it the third time is in the top 10. One singer in the countdown got a "cease and desist order" from a judge to stop him from singing songs about Jesus in church. When he decided to continue, the media heard about it, the Today Show sent cameras, and this singer got his big break. 40: Paranoimia ΓÇô The Art Of Noise With Max Headroom 39: We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off ΓÇô Jermaine Stewart 38: Mad About You ΓÇô Belinda Carlisle 37: Girl Can't Help It - Journey 36: Glory Of Love (Theme From "The Karate Kid Part II") ΓÇô Peter Cetera 35: Point Of No Return ΓÇô Nu Shooz 34: Earth Angel (From "Karate Kid Part II") ΓÇô New Edition 33: I Didn't Mean To Turn You On ΓÇô Robert Palmer LDD: In Your Wildest Dreams ΓÇô The Moody Blues 32: Sweet Love ΓÇô Anita Baker 31: Money$ Too Tight (To Mention) ΓÇô Simply Red 30: True Colors ΓÇô Cyndi Lauper 29: A Matter Of Trust ΓÇô Billy Joel 28: Rumors ΓÇô Timex Social Club 27: Papa Don't Preach ΓÇô Madonna 26: Love Walks In ΓÇô Van Halen 25: Twist And Shout ΓÇô The Beatles 24: Man Size Love (From "Running Scared") - Klymaxx 23: All Cried Out ΓÇô Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam With Full Force 22: Heaven In Your Eyes - Loverboy 21: Press ΓÇô Paul McCartney 20: Heartbeat ΓÇô Don Johnson 19: Typical Male ΓÇô Tina Turner 18: Missionary Man ΓÇô The Eurythmics 17: Throwing It All Away - Genesis 16: The Captain Of Her Heart - Double 15: Two Of Hearts ΓÇô Stacey Q 14: When I Think Of You ΓÇô Janet Jackson 13: Sweet Freedom (Theme From "Running Scared") ΓÇô Michael McDonald 12: Higher Love ΓÇô Steve Winwood 11: Love Zone ΓÇô Billy Ocean 10: Baby Love - Regina 9: Dreamtime ΓÇô Daryl Hall 8: Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone) ΓÇô Glass Tiger 7: Venus - Bananarama 6: Walk This Way ΓÇô Run-D.M.C. 5: Words Get In The Way ΓÇô Miami Sound Machine LDD: Daniel ΓÇô Elton John 4: Take My Breath Away (Theme From "Top Gun") - Berlin 3: Friends And Lovers ΓÇô Carl Anderson And Gloria Loring 2: Dancing On The Ceiling ΓÇô Lionel Richie 1: Stuck With You ΓÇô Huey Lewis & The News
